Lauren and Ryan Maurer of Grenfell are Saskatchewan’s Outstanding Young Farmers for 2010. The announcement was made today at an awards luncheon at the Western Canada Farm Progress Show in Regina.

Operating as Land and Sky Grains Inc., Lauren and Ryan grow grains, pulses, oilseeds and pulse crops on more than 9,000 acres bordering the Qu’Appelle Valley. Up to 75 per cent of their acres are dedicated to Identity Preserved food markets, including some niche markets. They have four children ranging from 6 to 12 years of age.

Syngenta Canada is the Presenting Sponsor for the Saskatchewan OYF program.

“Syngenta continues to be a proud supporter of the Saskatchewan Outstanding Young Farmers Award,” says Jay Bradshaw, President, Syngenta Canada Inc.

“This partnership allows us to celebrate the success of these young and innovative farmers, and to give back to the organizations and communities in which we live, work and do business that help support the very fabric of Canadian agriculture. The efforts of these outstanding young farmers and the stories that we hear through the Outstanding Young Farmers Award, demonstrate the excellence that will undoubtedly lead to a bright future for Canadian agriculture.”

Lauren and Ryan Maurer will represent Saskatchewan at the National OYF event to be held in Victoria, B.C. this November. The other Saskatchewan nominees were Gordon and Sonia Decker of Strasbourg and Chad and Carissa Haaland of Hanley.

Saskatchewan OYF regional chair Marianne van Burck welcomed all the couples to the OYF family. “All three nominees are winners and we look forward to their continuing involvement with the provincial program.”
